The Internet has been around more than 40 years. It started as the Arpanet, which was a military application designed to be robust enough to survive an attack on communication lines of infrastructure (a message would be rerouted using a 'net'). The Web was an application (Mosaic) promulgated by Netscape and its founder Marc Andreessen. The Web and the Internet are not one and the same, but the Web is an application of the old internet which had no real browser interface. So the Web is the BIG change to the internet. Incidentally, the internet and the GPS system are both born of U.S. military applications.
