solve 5x^2-11x+3=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I cant find out what adds to - 11 and multiplys to 3

OpenStudy (jiteshmeghwal9):

it can't be solved through factorization method so u have to use the quadratic formula\[\Huge{x=\dfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}}\]

OpenStudy (jiteshmeghwal9):

here b=-11,a=5, c=-3 put the values & solve :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Btw how would i solve 8x-7-x^2=0?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do i rearrange it?

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would i rearrange it?

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

put the x^2 on the front. -x^2+8x-7 The factor out the negative. -(x^2-8x+7) Then factor and solve

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 7 or 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is (x-7)(x-1)=0 the correct step before the answer?

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Yup, that's right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so it doesnt matter if they have the same sign?

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

No

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks
