PLEASE HELP!!
Do you know the right triangle altitude theorem?
no
You need two things. 1) Right triangles so arranged are SIMILAR. 2) The Right Triangle Altitude Theorem Go!
The right triangle altitude theorem consists of two parts.
okay thanks
Part 1. In a right triangle, the length of the altitude drawn to the hypotenuse is the geometric mean of the lengths of the segments of the hypotenuse.
Part 2. In a right triangle, if the altitude is drawn to the hypotenuse, each leg is the geometric mean of the hypotenuse and the segment of the hypotenuse adjacent to the leg.
With those two parts you should be able to set up a proportion for each problem. Keep in mind what the geometric means is: If b is the geometric mean of a and c, then a/b = b/c
For example, look at problem 26. The two segments of the hypotenuse measure 1 and 9. The hypotenuse measures 10. x and y are legs of the large triangle. You can use part 2 of the theorem to set up a proportion to calculate x and another proportion to calculate y.
In problem 27., you are looking for the length of the altitude, y, so use part 1 first. Then use part 2 to get x.
