Bacterial endospores are a part of the bacterial cell that becomes activated during extreme conditions where the cell cannot continue its normal metabolic functions, and it begins to sporulate. It becomes a spore, which is 'inactive', but when ideal conditions reappear will be activated to resume its metabolic functions (become the bacteria again).
