How do you solve for a leg of a right triangle using pythagorean theorem?

Directrix (directrix):

Do you know the other two sides of the triangle? Or, the triangle a 30-60-90 triangle? The answer depends upon knowing more about the triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

18, 15, and x. 18 being the hypotenuse.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

pythag: \[(L_1)^2+(L_2)^2=(Hypot)^2\] rearrange for a leg \[(L_2)^2=(Hypot)^2-(L_1)^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i would do \[x^2 = 18^2-15^2\] ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

correct, then of course take the sqrt of each side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

;) youre welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 99, so what would i do for the square root?
