OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The total surface area of a cylinder is made up of three areas. The area of the base, with radius r, is A = (pi)r^2. There are 2 bases. Then you have the lateral area which is the area of a rectangle that has the circumference of the base as length and the height of the cylinder as width. The circumference of a circle is A = 2(pi)r. The area of a rectangle is A = LW.
