For a scavenger hunt, Jim's mom distributed a bag of 1,190 jelly beans evenly into 34 plastic containers and hid them around the yard. If, after the hunt, Jim has a total of 420 jelly beans, then how many of the plastic containers did he find?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

okay...well...1190 jelly beans / 34 containers means 35 jelly beans per container... he has 420 jelly beans 420 jelly beans / 35 jelly beans per container he found 12 containers

OpenStudy (keyonsay):

thank you

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

do you understand why i did all those steps?

OpenStudy (keyonsay):

no can you explain why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 12 containers 420 ? ---- = ---- 1190 34

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if there was 34 containers total. how many did he find? thats wat there mostly asking

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

sure..ill copy and paste here okay...well... first we want to find out how many jelly beans are in each of the containers.... 1190 jelly beans are divided up into 34 containers means 1190/34 = 35 so we know how many jelly beans are in each container.....now we want to know how many containers he has found if there's 35 jelly beans per container... and he has 420 jelly beans he has some number of containers...that number of containers have a total of 420 jelly beans so 420 jelly beans / 35 jelly beans per container means he found 12 containers check it....... in 12 containers....at 35 jelly beans per container....so 12 * 35 is 420 any better?

OpenStudy (keyonsay):

ok now i understand. Thank you sooo much!

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

not a problem :) glad to help
