Solve the following system of equations. 9x + 4y = -84 4x + y = -14 A. x = 4, y = -30 B. x = 5, y = -32.25 C. x = -30, y = 4 D. x = 12, y = -62

OpenStudy (radar):

Were you instructed to use a particular method ie, substitution or elimination method?

OpenStudy (beststudent):

no

OpenStudy (radar):

Which method do you prefer?

OpenStudy (beststudent):

which ever one would help me get the answer

OpenStudy (radar):

Either one will get you the answer. I personally prefer the elimination method. this method allows you to eliminate one of the variables by using algebra and combining the equations so a variable just disappears. Are you game for this?

OpenStudy (beststudent):

yes

OpenStudy (radar):

OK. You do know that if you multiply both sides of an equation by the same thing you have not changed the validity of the equation. Take the second equation and multiply all terms by -4 .

OpenStudy (beststudent):

yes

OpenStudy (radar):

Now take your result and add it to the first equation. You should get some thing that looks like this:|dw:1363296127450:dw|
