Find the difference of (−4x2 − 7x3 − 2) − (8x3 + 3x − 7x2)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

distribute the - into the second parenthesis...this will make it addition instead of subtraction

please show work im trying to learn it .

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

(−4x2 − 7x3 − 2) − (8x3 + 3x − 7x2) when i say distribute...i mean what is - times 8x^3? what is - times 3x? what is - times -7x²? this all becomes (−4x^2 − 7x^3 − 2) + (-8x^3 - 3x + 7x^2) now what is -4x^2 + 7x^2? -7x^3 + -8x^3?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

-4x^2 + 7x^2 ? ...this is 3x^2 -7x^3 + -8x^3 ?....this is -15x^3 so we have all we need -15x^3 + 3x^2 (dont forget the -3x and -2 we left behind) -15x^3 + 3x^2 -3x -2 would be our difference

thank you <3

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

anytime :) just remember this you cannot combine a number with x^3....with ANYTHING other than ANOTHER number with x^3 same for x same for x^2 same for constant numbers....you cannot combine say 2 and 3x they just stay the same remember those and you'll do great :)
