How do I do |x-10|=-8 ?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

This is my favourite kind of absolute value question :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It confuses me because the answer key tells me the answer is 0 with a line through it :s

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Something like this \[\huge \emptyset\]no doubt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, How is it that when I got x =2 and x=18?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Are you sure? Try replacing x with 2... What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh. I see now.

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

An absolute value equal to a negative? Move heaven and earth... it's NEVER gonna happen :)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

That "zero with a line through it" is not a number, it's a set... specifically the empty set. It means there is no solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I see, thanks for the help.

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

No problem :)
