Describe the Anaconda Plan of the Union Army.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A military strategy to defeat the Confederacy proposed in 1861 by the Commanding General of the Union Army, Gen. Winfield Scott. Scott's plan was to employ Union army and navy forces to blockade the southern ports, split the Confederacy in half by seizing the line of the Mississippi River, and establish strong Federal positions all around the periphery of the Confederate States. The “Anaconda Plan” was intended to force surrender without prolonged and bloody combat. It was not adopted formally, but the subsequent Union strategy for conducting the war was largely an active, aggressive form of the general plan to surround the Confederacy and “squeeze it to death.” hope this helps :)
