3tanx-2cotx=-5 help! (i know to rewrite it in reciprocal ratios but then i get stuck)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well you change cotx to 1/tanx so you will get 3tanx -2/tanx = -5 then you multiply the entire equation by tanx so you will get 3tan^2x -2 = -5tanx which will give you a quadratic equation 3tan^2x +5tanx -2 =0 and you should be able to solve from there

thanks! got it :D

your welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me know what you got

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got a pretty weird answer, would x be = 20 degrees 29 minutes, 200 degrees 29 minutes and 109 degrees 32 minutes and 289 degrees and 32 minutes??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o.O before you solved for x what did you get tanx x to be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tanx was 1/3 and -2, then i did the all stations to central thingy for the 4 quadrants

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup yup well im not sure what minutes are cus i never heard of it with respect to this topic. unless it has something to do with the question but i got 18.4 degrees 116.6 degrees and 296.6 degrees and well i rounded them off to 1 decimal place

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh right, yeeah it was just tan inverse on the calculator and then theres this button for the minutes conversion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh ok then well i dont know about that. but those are my solutions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cool THANKS ! :D
