|I didn't find it! HELP!| Find the Surface area of the space figure. >(^.^)<

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (phi):

it looks like each face is a triangle. what is the formula for the area of a triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a Triangular Pyramid but I can't remember that formula to that one, do you know it?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, it is a pyramid, but it is a square pyramid It has 4 sides and a bottom. so find the area of the pyramid, find the area of each side and the area of the bottom first step: what is the formula for the area of a triangle ?

OpenStudy (phi):

this gives the formula for lots of shapes http://www.mathsisfun.com/area.html

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Area for a triangle is = ½ × b × h ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi sorry for taking so long.

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, 1/2 *base*altitude (or height) they give you the base and the altitude, so you can find the area of one triangular face what is it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

42! ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait! 1/2 of 42? 21!?

OpenStudy (phi):

you need the base , and the height. multiply times each other, then divide by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, 1/2 x (the slant) height (42), times that, then divide by 2 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

either multiply by 1/2 or divide by 2 but not both multiplying by 1/2 is the same as dividing by 2. you know the height is 42 what is the base of the triangle ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

21 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

the "base" is the bottom edge of the triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm so sorry, and feel really stupid right now, but. Can you tell me what the base is of the bottom edge of the triangle

OpenStudy (phi):

look at your picture. they label the length of the bottom side (and the altitude also)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

45 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. If we laid the triangle flat, it would look like this |dw:1363536083753:dw|
