Binary, Please explain me how 11101111 = -17 or 11110111 = -9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the MSB if 1 -> -ve number the rest of them, take 2's compliment

OpenStudy (christos):

-ve number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, in 11110111, the MSB on left is "1"->means the number is a -ve now, the rest, "1110111" -> take 2's compliment

OpenStudy (christos):

whats a -ve number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a negative number :)

OpenStudy (christos):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. so, invert the number gives "0001000" and add 1 = "0001001" = 9 and -ve so, you get -9

OpenStudy (christos):

same thing about the other?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (christos):

it gave me 8 :D

OpenStudy (christos):

ah yes the +1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (christos):

:DD
