Find the general term an for the geometric sequence a1=-4 and a 2 =12?

Here is my work:

a2 = a1 * r^(2 -1) = a1 * r

solve for r: 12 = - 4 * r

r = - 3

an = (- 4) * (- 3)^(n - 1) ?
