Find the value of x. Round the length to the nearest tenth.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

145

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah @Directrix

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah!

Directrix (directrix):

Which trig function is opposite leg over hypotenuse? @HeyImKae

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's sin, right?!

Directrix (directrix):

sin(35 degrees) = x/15

Directrix (directrix):

x = 8.6205 approx ? Yes or no?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! That's what I got

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So my answer is going to be x = 9 because you can round it up?

Directrix (directrix):

Great. @zakrocks007 dropped a bad answer on us. Beware answers with no supporting work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I don't usually use people's answers who don't help me solve it lol, I'd rather have someone walk me through the steps and learn something like you're doing instead of just using 145 and getting a bad grade!

Directrix (directrix):

The 6 in 8.6205 is greater than 5 so round to the next integer of 9 if the instructions say go to the next integer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well it says to round the length to the nearest tenth

Directrix (directrix):

Oh, no, then 9 is not correct.

Directrix (directrix):

8.6205 would, to the nearest tenth, be 8.6 because the 2 in the hundredths place is smaller than 5. Is 8.7 an option? If so, we may need to recalculate with more digits of sine of 35 degrees.

Directrix (directrix):

If those other problems we did were round to the nearest tenth problems, we may have to go back and check them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think 8.7 is an option, and the other two weren't round to the nearest tenth! :)

Directrix (directrix):

Okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I would say 8.7?!

Directrix (directrix):

8.6205, to the nearest tenth, is 8.6. Choose 8.6. But, if 8.6 AND 8.7 are given as answer options, we will need to crank out the problem again with more digits of sine of 35 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well there aren't options, it's one of the questions where you put in your own answer, if that makes sense! It's not multiple choice

Directrix (directrix):

Hold on. I'll run more digits of sin 35.

Directrix (directrix):

0.57357643635 = x/15 x = 15*0.57357643635 x = 8.60364654525

Directrix (directrix):

x = 8.6 0364654525 8.6

Directrix (directrix):

Those questions where you give your own answer are called "free response" questions. The response is open-ended.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok! :D thank you!! Can you help with one more?! It's my last one :)
