one method to reduce a fraction is to 'simplify' the numerator and the denominator by factoring them into prim numbers . then the common factors will cancel
for \[\frac9{12}\]
we go like this
\[\frac9{12}=\frac{3\times3}{3\times4}=\frac{\cancel{3\times}3}{\cancel{3\times}4}=\frac34\]
