OpenStudy (anonymous):

Should commercial fruit farmers be allowed to use ethylene to accelerate the ripening of fruit for the market? Why or Why not?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

sure, it's only an immediate danger for the farmer (as it's combustible) not consumer

OpenStudy (dean.shyy):

There are advantages and disadvantages. Expediting the ripening process may cause abnormal growth that may cause mutations. While expediting the ripening process could increase profits and fulfill the food demand quota, health issues may arise. This marginal risk is uncertain to me. So, if the marginal risk is quite low, I would support expediting the ripening process. However, if the marginal risk is high, I would not support such process.
