^1 is just like saying 64*1, once you have your answer you divide it by 3.

I would disagree, the question is 64^(1/3) which is the cube root of 64, just like 16^(1/2) is the square root of 16, the answer for both is 4. Because 4x4x4= 16x4= 40+24= 64 Assuming the 1/3 is in the power.
