Penicillium notatum is a mold that is the source of the antibiotic penicillin. Which is the reason for placing it in the phylum Deuteromycota?

For the taxonomy the shape, spores, septation are studied. Fungi which belong to the phylum deuteromycota, don't fit into any of the three described sexual reproduction methods. Thats why they are called "imperfect fungi" or "deuteromycota". hope this helps.
