Why does a red shirt appear red when viewed under white light?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Basically, white light contains all of the colors in the spectrum in which the human eye can see. The dyes in the shirt essentially absorb all of these colors and reflect back magenta and yellow...which are our eyes perceive as red.

OpenStudy (dean.shyy):

The color that people see is a process hat involves color absorption, reflection, and perception of light.
