PROBLEM The scatter diagram of SAT verbal and math scores in a state is roughly football shaped, and the correlation is 0.65. A student is on the 40th percentile of verbal scores. Find the regression estimate of this student’s percentile rank in math.

OpenStudy (kropot72):

First transform the percentile rank for verbal scores into standard units by using the normal table. The z-score for the 40th percentile = -0.253 Next multiply the percentile rank for verbal scores in standard units by the correlation coefficient to obtain the predicted math score in standard units. The z-score for math = (-0.253) * (0.65) = -0.16445. Finally use the standard normal distribution table to convert the z-score for math to a percentile, giving math on the 43rd percentile.
