What exactly is decontamination? And can you give an example? The definition I have is "the mechanical removal of most microbes from an animate or inanimate surface." How is it mechanical?

OpenStudy (dean.shyy):

Decontamination is an anti-septic process. Your definition would be considered mechanical because it is referring to the drainage process involving a septic tank.

So what is the difference between disinfection and decontamination?

OpenStudy (dean.shyy):

Disinfection removes HARMFUL organisms. Decontamination remotes ALL or MOST organisms and chemicals.

OpenStudy (dean.shyy):

When you have a wound, it would be a good idea that you disinfect, not decontaminate, because there is an option for the wound to attract harmful bacteria, pathogens, etc.
