Why would you need to read your essay several times when editing it?
Well I know for me I have two reasons one is I have problems putting my thoughts into words so what sounds great toe sounds like a jumbled mess to you and I am not good at spelling so I have to look at that a lot to hope this helps :)
To make sure that you have everything spelled right, no grammar mistakes, to basically check to make sure you have everything right.
you can't notice everything in one reading. one time you might read it through to see if it has good flow and if the ideas make sense. the next time you might be checking the spelling and grammar. a final reading might be to cut out areas where you think it's too wordy. each reading is a different layer and you look for/see different things. it's worth the trouble, because then you don't turn something in with lots of errors that could have been avoided. even the best writers (especially the best writers) re-read and edit their work many times. that's how they get so good! even deciding to do 2 read-through's would be a good start.
So, that you do not miss any technical and grammatical errors.
