ANOTHER CHALLENGING QUEST A man decides to make a garden in front of hi house and fence it. He can have it in the shape of a rectangle or a parallelogram. He chooses the rectangle over. The parallelogram whose length is 10m and width is 7m. The cost of fencing is Rs.1500 per metre. Answer the following questions: (i) What was the cost incurred by him? (ii) Why did he choose a rectangle and not a parallelogram? Which perimeter would have been more-a rectangle or a parallelogram? Justify with the help of a figure. c) What value of the man is shown here?

I think you'll know how to answer (i). (ii): this has to do with the area enclosed by the fence. You can look at this in two ways: either he uses a fixed amount of fencing, or he wants to enclose a fixed area. In the first case, an ever more skewed parallelogram uses up the same amount of fencing, while the area is decreasing. The rectangle has the largest area. In the second case, he has to use more and more fencing to get the same area as in the case of a rectangle.
