I believe proteins cause you to gain weight. However, liquid protein can induce weight loss. To reinforce, the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine has an article that says just that. The article showed that consumption of protein shakes caused those to lose weight and decrease their blood cholesterol in 28 days. However, safety is questionable as the safest might be a tailored diet with exercise.

I don't believe it is the safest way to lose weight, though, because one is not obtaining the amount of nutrients he/she needs everyday.
