Running head: OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Erin Oldham ECE 52 Karin Anderson Shasta College Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by thoughts or images that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry with strange behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety or by combination of such obsessions and compulsions (citation). These obsessions are often so compelling and recurrent that they bother the daily lives of the people with OCD. These obsessions of the people may include doubts about whether one has locked the doors and shut the windows or images created by their mind, and even fear of dirt. Symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder may include repetitive hand washing or cleaning, repeated checking, extreme hoarding, and preoccupation with sexual or aggressive impulses. These symptoms can be alienation and time-consuming and often cause severe emotional and financial distress. OCD affects both children and adults but the most common targets of OCD are children because they tend to be afraid of many things and believe in nearly everything. The phrase obsessive-compulsive has become part of the English lexicon which means it is used in a language or by a person or group of people (Merriam-Webster). It is used in an informal manner to describe someone who is excessively meticulous.
