Q scores are normally distributed in the population. Who has a higher IQ: a student with a 120 IQ on a scale where 100 is the mean and 10 is the standard deviation, or a professor with a 128 IQ on a scale where 100 is the mean and 15 is the standard deviation?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Calculate the z-scores for the student and the professor. Then find which person is in the higher IQ area of the normal distribution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I calculate the z scores from that data?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

For the student: \[z=\frac{X-\mu}{\sigma}=\frac{120-100}{10}=you\ can\ calculate\] You can find the z-score for the professor in the same way.

okay thx, so the student has the higher iq

OpenStudy (kropot72):

You're welcome :)
