why does -3^2=-9 and (-3)^2=9 ?

For the -3 you are squaring the three which is nine then you are multiplying the negative to make it -9. for the (-3)^2 you are squaring the whole thing whiich is 9 because -3 times -3 = 9.

when there are parenthesis you square everything inside.
