You are ordering a pizza and soda for the big game. A deep dish pizza costs $10.25, and a two-liter of soda is $2.00. For each touchdown that the Eagles score on Sunday, Vinny's Pizza lowers the cost by $1.50. How many touchdowns will the Eagles have to score for your bill to come to $4.75? Explain how to solve for the missing value using an equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you know that the price of the two-liter soda won't change. it will always be 4.75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so we also know that the price of the pizza decreases 1.50 for each time that the Eagles score a touchdown so the pizza price will be 10.25-(1.5*x) where x is the number of touchdowns. is x = 0 you pay full price. however you want the sum total of what you pay to equal 4.75. so how do you do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you would subtract 1.5 from 10.25 to see how many touchdowns

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually you would have to take a sum total of the price of the soda plus the price of the pizza and make it equal to 4.75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 5 touchdowns

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you have 2.00+(10.25-1.5*x) = 4.75 so solving for x you get 5 touchdowns. correct.
