Which of the following is not an example of work? A. raising a barbell over your head B. picking up a box off the floor C. holding a tray in the cafeteria line D. pushing a box across the floor

OpenStudy (richyw):

when a force displaces an object it does work. So which of those things is not being displaced?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d?

OpenStudy (richyw):

does a box move when you push it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (richyw):

ok so then you are displacing it from its original position. you apply a force and it moves the box, so you are doing work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhhhhhhhh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get it!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it has to be c then

OpenStudy (richyw):

if you lift something up you are also doing work, you displace it from the ground to wherever it ends up. so you have done work.

OpenStudy (richyw):

but if you just hold something in one spot, you are not displacing it. so I think it should be obvious which one is not being displaced!
