The US was neutral. The thinking was this isn't our war and we need not get involved in it. We thought the two oceans separated us from the troubles of the world.

But Woodrow Wilson had campaigned for reelection in 1916 and wanted to keep the US out of the war directly. However, Germany sought to avoid the resupply of its enemies, and its actions soon had the opposite of the intended effect. The US entered the war in 1917 for a variety of reasons.
