PLEASE HELP!!! Quick question about speeds and rates... If a boat travels 23 mph in still water, how many mph would it travel against a current that has a rate of 2mph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not 21...

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

it depends on the direction of the boat - if it travels with the current then its speed is 25 mph

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

if it is travelling in the opposite direct ( against the current) then its speed is 21 mph. that is its speed relative to the bank.

Well, I'm doing a problem where I have to solve... "If a boat that travels 23 miles per hour in still water is traveling with a current that has a rate of 2 miles per hour, how far will the boat travel in 3 hours? " And I thought the answer would be 63, because against the current the boat travels 21 and...oh wait i just saw it! oh, silly me...thank you, you are correct crcrw238...that's my mistake, the word problem said WITH the current, and I totally skipped that.

oh ok lol
