There are two types of blood vessels. One type is artery, and the other type is a vein. Arteries do not have any valves, however veins do. The place where veins occur the most are in your lower extremities because gravity has a strong force in pulling the blood downwards. So, valves are there to prevent blood from going down, but help it go to the heart. Look at the photo I attach to help clarify an experiment you can use to test this principle out.
