This is Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides: Solve for x: 3(x + 1) = −2(x − 1) − 4 1 −1 −5 −25 PLEASEEE! Include the steps you toke to get the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Those are the answer choices btw

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

do you want the answer or help?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

YOYO i got this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

both?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

I cant give you the answers...its against the code of conduct but i can help you... first you need to distribute..do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

start by multiplying them out: 3(x+1) and -2(x-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohk & yes so it would be 3x+3=-2x-3-4 right?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

correct now simplify it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by adding 2x on both sides right?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

well yes but lets start with the addition and subtraction... you would first subract -3-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that would be -7

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 3x+3=-2x-7 now add 2x then subtract three on both sides?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

now subtract the three on the left from the -7 on the right

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

and write it again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait i think i distributed wrong with the -2x shouldnt it be -2x+2?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

OH VERY GOOD! I want to say i was hoping you would pick up on that but i am sorry i missed it too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohk :D

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

so now simplify 2-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got x=-1 right?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

no... that is wrong..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

;o crap

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

so far we have.. 3x+3=-2x+2-4

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

lets try simplifying again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that would be 3x+3=-2x-2

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

correct...now subtract the three from both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x=-2x+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think you did that wrong because your suppose to get them on one side

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

wait wait wait...i did nothing wrong...you added the three...you need to SUBTRACT it

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

dont worry girl...it will be done right bare with me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohk so that would be 3=-5x-2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now i add 2 and that equals 5=-5x divide that and its -1? right?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

REWIND...FORGET THE X's JUST DO THE ADDITION... 3x+3=-2x-2 -3 -3 What do you get...NOT THE THREE X JUST THE POSITVE THREE

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

ps: im not yelling

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohk so thats 3x=-2x+5

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

no...its 3x=-2x-5

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

then do the x's

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

you need to know the order...when you get up into the geometry you will suffer if you dont learn this now!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

order is PEMDAS right?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

always move the addition and subtraction before you do the variables PEMDAS is when you are solving a different equation...it is all addition and subtraction untill the end here...so first get the ones without the variable on one side then move the variable..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohk but u still get -1 right? xD

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

so you subtract the three (not three x)from the negitive two and you get -5...now...do the variables and get them off to one side KEEP UP WITH THE EQUATION...DONT JUMP AHEAD LOL

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

JUST DO THE STEPS

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

3X=-2X-5 what is next...get the -2x isolated on the other side...how do you do that?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

yes the answer is -1...but i wanted you to do the steps not just tell me the answer..i wanted to make sure you grasped the consepts.. \(\Huge \color{red}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\tiny \color{violet}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\Huge \color{red}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\tiny \color{violet}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\Huge \color{red}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\tiny \color{violet}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\Huge \color{red}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\) \(\large \color{red} {\mathbb {~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Don’t~Forget~To~Fan~And~Best~The~Answers!}}\) \(\Huge \color{red}{~\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\mathbb Welcome\:\:\mathbb To\:\:\mathbb Open\mathbb Study}\) \(\large \color{red}{~\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~-\mathbb Snuggie\mathbb Lad }\) \(\Huge \color{red}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\tiny \color{violet}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\Huge \color{red}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\tiny \color{violet}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\Huge \color{red}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\tiny \color{violet}{*}\)\(\Tiny \color{pink}{*}\)\(\small \color{purple}{*}\)\(\large \color{orange}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\Huge \color{red}{*}\)\(\huge \color{blue}{*}\)\(\LARGE \color{green}{*}\)\(\Large \color{yellow}{*}\)

First look at the problem you want to tackle first. Lets tackle the equation ont he left first which is 3(x+1) distribute the 3. Now your problem should look like this: 3x+3. NOw lets do thesa me for the equation on the right side which is -2(x-1)-4 distribute -2. NOw your equations hould look like this: -2x+2-4. Now the equations read: 3x+3=-2x+2-4 leave the left side alone at this point and lets focus on the right side once more. WE have -2x+2-4 subtract 2 from negative 4 now the equation should read -2x-2. THe equation shouldr ead 3x+3=-2x-2 now add 2 to both sides like this: 3x+3=-2x-2 +2 +2 ---------- 5x+3=-2 this is now the equation now subtract 3 from both sides like this 5x+3=-2 -3 -3 ------------ 5x=-5 now divide by 5 x= ? you should be able to get your answer
