The midpoint of a line segment with end points as (x, 4) and (-2, -2) is (2, 1). What is the value of x? x = 6 x = 4 x = -3 x = -2

OpenStudy (ajprincess):

Let the coordinates of the end points be \((x_1,y_1)\) and \((x_2,y_2)\) and the coordinate of the midpoint be \((x,y)\) Then \[x=\frac{ x_1+x_2 }{ 2 }\] \[y=\frac{ y_1+y_2 }{ 2 }\] Does that help?

I don't really get how to plug in the numbers... Like, how would you know which ones are x1, x2, etc.
