A person goes out of his house between 6 pm and 7 pm and returns back the same evening between 7 and 8. When he gets back home he realizes that the hands of the clock have exchanged their positions. For how long did he go out ?

well for the hour when leaving has to be between 6 and 7... and so the minute hand needs to be between 7 and 8. when transposed the hour hand will be between 7 and 8 and the minute hand between 6 and 7. and in the leaving time the hands will be past the 1/2 way for the 30 degree arc formed. i.e. 6 to 7. for example leaves at 6:38 and arrives home at 7 33 so he is out for 55 mins... best I can do at short notice.
