Magnesium fluoride has a high melting point and boiling point. Why?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

all alkali earth (group 2A) has a high melting point and boiling point ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can I have a more scientific answer? Is it because they are ionic bonds?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

do ionic bonds have a high melting and boiling point?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ionic bonds are really hard to break apart. The electrons are transferred very well from the metal to the non-metal. So they should have a very high melting and boiling point.
