f(x)= 4 tan x Solve f(x)=-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

set it up as 4tanx = -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did, I don't know what to do afterwards.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

try and get the tanx by itself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So tanx=-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct now how do you find what x is if you know what the trig function is equal to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I do inverse of tangent to both sides? o_o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remember that tanx is equal to y/x or rise over run on a triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I'm lost. T~T

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's ok 1 secound

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so you're looking for the Θ and you have found that y/x is equal to -1. if we use the unit circle we'll see that y/x is -1 at 2 places.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah pi/4 and 5pi/4 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not quite but very close those are where tanx = 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 3pi/4 and 7pi/4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So x=3pi/4 and 7pi/4, that's it?
