Why did oceans not exist on Earth nearly 4 billion years ago

4 billion years the ago the earth was simply a ball of heat and gas swirling in chaos. Only when the earth cool down did the gas condense and rain down for millions of years hence creating the oceans. Before that, there was nothing but gas.
