find the product. (n + 8)(n - 2)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Ever heard of the FOIL method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how you do this is called FOIL ing. The "F" stands for 'first' so what you do is multiply the first two figures, in this case, 'n' and 'n' to get n². the "O" stands for 'outers' so you multiply the outermost figures in this case 'n' and '-2' (don't forget the negative!) to get '-2n' . the 'I' stands for 'inners' so multiply the inner two figures: 8 and n to get 8n. the L stands for last. so multiply the last two figures: 8 and -2 (don't forget the negative!) to get -16. so what you have is: n² -2n+8n-16. so just combine like terms. the answer is n²+6n-16
