Here's something that might help. Metaphase is where the chromosomes align in the middle. I remember this because meta starts with "M", which is kind of like middle. Anaphase is separation - I used to think ana, like breaking up with "ana". i forgot the rest, but I'm sure you can think of a good method to remember the steps.
