An orchestra consists of 25 members. The youngest member is 32 years old. She leaves and is replaced by a new member who is 30 years old. 1)By how much does the replacement change the average age of the members of the orchestra? 2)By how much does the replacement change the median age of the members of the orchestra?
the average dereases by 2/25 the median won't change as you are replacing the yongest with someone younger...
@campbell_st Will you explain in brief?
ok.... so the mean is sum of the scores/ number of scores... so the sum of the ages will decrease by 2... and the number of scores still remains at 25 so the change is a decrease of 2/25 or 8% the median... you have the youngest... leaving and replacing with a younger... so the new member will still be the minimum... in a data set of 25... to the order of the scores won't change... which results in no change in the median.
