If people could change their usernames, it would be impossible to know who each user is. Would open the door to more mischief than it would solve, in my opinion.

THOUGH each user could have a unique ID for themselves, that mods could identify them with.

The problem I'd be concerned about is people making confusion by changing their usernames to closely reflect other peoples' usernames...

I remember when there was a Blues and we had no end of mixups.

well at this point anyone at the signup page can create a username duplicating anyone, with the aid of invisible characters.

Some invisible characters (like Alt+0173) don't even take up any space, so you can even pretend with the same pic and same profile with adding that that character at the end, and no one will know if it's not him or really is!! Other then the smartscore or the fans or mod/amby status, but what about new users ??

I keep telling the admins like ShadowFiend to strip these characters on the signup page to no avail.
