What is a homozygous genotype?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First of all, do you know what a genotype is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The particular alleles an individual carries.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right. "Homo-" means "same," so if your genotype (your alleles) are "homozygous," that would mean they are the same.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They can either be homozygous dominant or recessive. With a lowercase "a" meaning recessive and uppercase meaning dominant, a homozygous genotype could either be "aa" or "AA" but NOT "Aa" because those aren't the same. Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes,thank you

No problem! :)
