Evolution generally should have survival benefit. Perhaps men became tall, strong, lean and hairy to pursue prey or elude predators in the rain while women who where smaller needing less calories and could store more fat survived longer back at the cave with nursing infants until the men returned with prime ribs of whatever moved too slow that week.
