Compute the check digit for the UPC symbol: 0-51111-12881. Can anybody explain how?

I believe it would be 3 using the method where you sum up the odd position digits (in this case getting 12 then multiplying by 3 getting a value of 36 (now save that). Next sum up the even positions getting 17. Next add that to 36 for a total of 53. Now divide by 10 and note the remainder of three. That should be your check digit and it would be placed on the extreme right hand end giving you: 0-51111-128813

I have heard of it adding the odds and evens and dividing by your total numbers but I was not sure if it was correct or the if it was the correct format
