What is a good way to write a thesis statement for a research paper?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Start out with a research question. What are you curious about? Once you've done some research, come up with an arguable statement-- something you can support with research information. Example: The Sedition Acts in the United States violated freedom of speech. Now, add a little hint of 3 things you are going to talk about in the essay. Call these a, b, and c. Example: Through limiting wha newspapers could write, what citizens could say, and what political groups could express about the war, the Sedition Acts in the United States violated freedom of speech." In this case, a = what newspapers could write B= what citizens could say C= what political groups could express That means that you will address each of these 3 points as the main topics of your paper. Does that make sense?

An easy way to write your thesis statement is to come up with a question your trying to research about in your research paper. For example, your main topic on your research paper is: Q: “What are the potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class?” A: “The potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class are . . .” OR A: “Using computers in a fourth-grade class promises to improve . . .” The answer to your research question can be your thesis statement (this is how i used to create my thesis statement). But you should beware, that a thesis statement has to be in a complete sentence that express one main idea of your essay.
