The Yazoo Land Scandal started before 1785. In 1794, the Georgia Company, the Georgia-Mississippi Company, the Upper Mississippi Company, and the new Tennessee Company were sold more than 40,000,000 acres of land for $500,000. Many Georgia officials and legislators were stockholders in these companies. The bill allowing the Yazoo land sales was repealed in 1796. Jackson burned all copies of the bill except for one that had been sent to President George Washington. During the fallout, the state refunded money to people who bought land. Some refused the money. They wanted to keep the land. But the state did not recognize their claims. The matter ended up in court for the next decade. The state gave up all claims to lands west of its present border.
