A function is a set of data that has one distinct output for each input, but functions are much more than x and y living together on a Cartesian plane in a graph paper galaxy. They have applications in real life. Functions describe the relationship between an input and its output.

You're having a good time asking questions that are making me bang my head against the wall tonight, aren't you? :-) As with your last question, this one is also beyond my knowledge. However, I did find this paper which makes a very interesting read: http://homepages.ius.edu/PMILLER/M122/algebra_of_functions.pdf I've saved it to my hard drive, and I'll peruse it at my leisure. Maybe we'll both learn something here. :-)
